Propane Sales Insurance Review
Propane sales, cylinder exchange, dispensing, storage, and delivery add fire, products, pollution, property, and commercial-vehicle exposures.
"Selling or exchanging propane is a product-transfer operation, not ordinary campground storage; document who handles it, where it moves, and what a leak could affect."
Propane sales or cylinder exchange differs from having a tank used only by the campground. A release or vehicle impact can affect employees, guests, neighboring property, the park’s buildings, and the ability to keep selling or operating. Storage, filling, transport, customer handling, ignition sources, and emergency response should be described as a distinct operation. OSHA requirements are one safety reference; fire, building, environmental, and local rules may also apply.
Map the transfer operation
Record cylinders, bulk tanks, quantities, transfer equipment, exchange cages, delivery routes, separation, barriers, signage, emergency shutoffs, and nearby buildings, vehicles, grills, and guest areas. Identify trained staff, inspection schedules, leak response, damaged-cylinder procedures, and who owns the product before and after sale. OSHA and PERC resources inform safe handling; they do not determine the policy response.
Match the operation to the loss
Ask about general and products liability for alleged injury or property damage, pollution coverage for a qualifying release and cleanup, property and fire terms for the park’s assets, and commercial auto for owned or hired delivery vehicles. Products liability concerns an allegation that a product caused injury or damage; it is not a promise that every leak is covered. A supplier’s contract or certificate may allocate some responsibilities but does not remove the park’s duties or guarantee protection. Pollution definitions, gradual-release provisions, storage and transfer exclusions, fire protections, and limits can create gaps. Coordinate the review with any on-site fuel, maintenance, restaurant, and event operations.
Prepare for a coverage review
Keep permits, training, inspections, maintenance, invoices, delivery logs, product ownership records, contracts, incident reports, site maps, emergency contacts, and response procedures. Request a campground coverage review and quote from The Southern Agency; the request does not bind coverage, and the operation’s policy terms and facts control.
Hypothetical: a vehicle strikes the exchange cage
Suppose a hypothetical delivery vehicle strikes a cylinder-exchange cage and a damaged cylinder leaks near a store and guest parking. The possible costs include evacuation, fire response, cleanup, property damage, third-party injury allegations, and an interrupted sales operation. General or products liability for an alleged injury or damage caused by the operation or product, pollution coverage for a qualifying release, property, fire, and commercial-auto coverage could address different losses. Ownership, custody, storage and transfer procedures, exclusions, pollution definitions, limits, and local requirements may affect the response. This is not a real claim.
Propane Sales Risk Considerations
- Describe cylinders, bulk tanks, quantities, transfer equipment, exchange cages, separation, barriers, signage, and nearby exposures.
- Identify trained staff, inspection, leak response, emergency shutoff, delivery, damaged-cylinder, and customer-handling rules.
- Ask The Southern Agency about products, pollution, premises, property, fire, commercial auto, and supplier responsibilities.
- Keep permits, training, inspections, maintenance, invoices, delivery, incident, and supplier records.
